Dark-green Fritillary was considered close to extinction in Hertfordshire but in recent years, there have been occasional reports from sites along the Chiltern Hills. There are several thriving colonies in Bedfordshire

We also saw a very tatty, weak Silver-washed Fritillary. I took one photo and then followed it to try for another when a Hawker (Southern we think) struck and carried it off! End of story!

Silver-washed Fritillary was considered extinct in both Hertfordshire and Middlesex. However, in recent years (in particular 2004 and 2006), there have been reports from several sites in the branch area. It is hoped that the species could be breeding at some of these sites. There are also thriving colonies in Surrey and regular reports from a site just over the county border in Buckinghamshire.
