October 2008: Here's something our local members may find interesting. "Spot the difference". You find a Painted Lady in Australia that's very similar to the Painted Lady found in many other parts of the world. Only the Australian Painted Lady has a row of blue spots on the bottom edge of each hindwing. From something that appears very familiar to something that is quite local and scarce a Western Dusky Azure. We found this butterfly at White Gum Flats 70km north of Albany near to Australia's southern ocean coast - my book says it shouldn't really be found there! Its a "blue" butterfly that's as big as a small tortoiseshell, is darker than a ringlet and flies in short bursts near the ground like a Wall.
Having a lovely time and seeing a few butterflies in the 22 degree sunny bush-lands around Perth WA. Here's a two-spot lined blue, a klugs xenica and a rayed blue taken at Yanchep National Park - Dave Chandler
